Amite Hasan replaces concussed Mominul in Bangladesh squad for Sylhet Test as Mushfiqur returns

Sylhet International Cricket Stadium during a Test, venue of Bangladesh's second Test against West Indies

Amite Hasan has replaced Mominul Haque in Bangladesh’s 15-man squad for the second Test against West Indies in Sylhet, the Bangladesh Cricket Board announced on Saturday, The Daily Star reported. Mominul is out under the ICC’s concussion rule, and Mushfiqur Rahim returns after missing the first Test with a finger injury.

The squad came out hours after the eight-wicket defeat in Mirpur that left Bangladesh 1-0 down. A draw in Sylhet would give West Indies the series, so the batting order that collapsed on Friday is the one the selectors had to fix.

Key points

  • Amite Hasan replaces Mominul Haque in Bangladesh’s 15-man squad for the second Test in Sylhet from 5 November
  • Mominul must sit out seven days under the ICC concussion rule after being hit on the head in Mirpur
  • Mushfiqur Rahim, who missed Mirpur with a finger injury, is back; the rest of the squad is unchanged

Why Mominul cannot play

Mominul was hit on the head at silly point on the third day in Mirpur and could not bat again. Jaker Ali came in as his concussion replacement on 30 October. The ICC rule keeps a concussed player out for a minimum of seven calendar days, which runs past the start of the Sylhet Test on 5 November.

Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto had already said as much after the defeat. “I don’t think Mominul bhai will be able to play the second Test,” he told reporters, adding: “This is entirely a medical issue.”

Amite’s case: 201 not out in the NCL

Amite, a right-handed batter, earned the call with an unbeaten 201 in the fourth round of the National Cricket League. He followed it with 34 against Chattogram in round five on Saturday, according to The Daily Star.

Mushfiqur’s return matters more for the XI. Bangladesh’s top four made 23 runs between them in the second innings in Mirpur, and their most experienced Test batter was watching. He is the likelier of the two to take the vacant middle-order place.

The squad

Najmul Hossain Shanto (captain), Shadman Islam, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Tawhid Hridoy, Litton Kumer Das, Jaker Ali Anik, Mehidy Hasan Miraz (vice-captain), Nayeem Hasan, Hasan Mahmud, Taijul Islam, Shoriful Islam, Mushfiqur Rahim, Taskin Ahmed, Ebadot Hossain Chowdhury, Amite Hasan.

A good memory from Sylhet

The ground holds one of this group’s best Test days: Bangladesh beat New Zealand there by 150 runs in December 2023, with Taijul taking ten wickets in the match and Shanto making 105 in the second innings in his first Test as captain. Both are in this squad.

Market watch

  • West Indies only need a draw. Bangladesh have to take 20 wickets, which puts the focus on Taijul and Nayeem again.
  • Mushfiqur’s return makes the middle order look sturdier on paper than it did in Mirpur, where the top order was the problem.
  • Watch the Sylhet pitch reports. Roston Chase and Jomel Warrican took nine second-innings wickets on the Mirpur turner.
