India U19 Asia Cup squad: Raichandani to captain as Aaryavir Sehwag and Anvay Dravid earn places

Graphic of India's U19 Asia Cup squad facts: 15 players, Pakistan on 8 November, final in Muscat on 14 November

Lakshya Raichandani will captain India at the ACC Men’s U19 Asia Cup in Muscat next month, after the BCCI’s junior selection committee named a 15-man squad on Friday that includes Aaryavir Sehwag and Anvay Dravid, according to a BCCI statement carried by ANI and The Sunday Guardian.

The surnames will draw the attention, but this squad has a score to settle. India lost last year’s final to Pakistan in Dubai, and the two sides meet again in the group stage on 8 November, which this year falls on Diwali.

Key points

  • Lakshya Raichandani will captain India, with Yashbardhan Singh Chauhan as vice-captain
  • Aaryavir Sehwag and wicketkeeper Anvay Dravid are in the 15-man squad
  • The tournament runs from 5 to 14 November in Muscat; India play Pakistan on 8 November

The squad

Yashbardhan Singh Chauhan is vice-captain. Anvay Dravid, son of Rahul Dravid, is one of two wicketkeepers alongside Rajat Baghel. Aaryavir Sehwag, son of Virender Sehwag, is a top-order batter who also bowls leg-spin.

Full squad: Lakshya Raichandani (capt), Yashbardhan Singh Chauhan (vice-capt), Aaryavir Sehwag, VK Vineeth, Kushagra Ojha, Arjun Rajput, Manal Chauhan, Anvay Dravid (wk), Rajat Baghel (wk), V Yashveer, Aryan Savsani, Mohit Ulva, Kavya Patel, Shavin Vinod, Ishan Sood.

Picked on runs, not names

Both famous sons arrive with recent numbers behind them. Sehwag made 173 off 143 balls for Delhi against Chandigarh in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy, and Dravid scored 358 runs in five innings for Karnataka in the same competition, with two hundreds, according to CricTracker.

The Vinoo Mankad Trophy is the BCCI’s under-19 one-day competition, so those runs came in the same 50-over format the Asia Cup uses. Raichandani’s side will need them: the group stage is three games in five days.

India’s route through Group A

India are in Group A with Pakistan, the UAE and Nepal, and the top two from each group go through to the semi-finals on 12 November. India open against Nepal on 6 November and play Pakistan two days later. The fixture list carried by CricTracker has India’s last group game against the UAE on 10 November.

Group B has Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Malaysia.
